Case Study: One Week with On the Beach

September 2019

Dhavinia is a student at Loreto College who joined On the Beach on a one-week work experience placement. During her time at the Manchester office, she worked with a range of teams to understand what day-to-day life is like in a digital and technology business. We caught up with her at the end of the week to find out how valuable this Digital Futures opportunity had been for her.

What have you been working on?

I’ve worked across different teams in the office. First of all, I worked with agile development, moved onto the .net team where I worked with completely new languages and Javascript. Some of this related directly to Computer Science and some of it was new to me. I worked with the data analytics team and learned that it is more than just charts, though I did learn some new, professional Excel skills. It was really interesting to learn what users do on the website. I then moved on to work with the UX team where we did some guerilla testing and I learned what a product owner does. Finally, I worked on the apps, both ioS and Android.

What have you learned?

I have learned so much this week. I learned about data analytics and the importance of having good communication with your team. For the first time, I participated in a stand up which is where you all discuss your progress and issues at the start of the day. I used Slack for the first time which means you can bounce off each other with ideas. I learn about agile development, split testing and was introduced to new job roles including User Experience (UX), Product Owner and Business Analyst.

During my work experience, I learned that to be successful, you need all kinds of different people with different skill sets all need to work together. Leadership is more important than just your technical skills and this experience has opened up my eyes to how good things are working in a digital and technology business.

Thank you to Digital Futures Ambassadors On the Beach for hosting this fantastic opportunity at their Manchester office.
